Description

Trolex Sentro X is an intrinsically safe fixed gas detection controller for underground mining, tunnelling and heavy industry, using hot-swappable sensors to minimise downtime.

Trolex Sentro X is a centralised fixed gas detection platform that continuously monitors toxic, oxygen and flammable gases in demanding mining and industrial environments. Acting as the main SENTRO X controller, it coordinates multiple sensing points, alarm functions and outputs to protect personnel and critical assets. Modular, pre-calibrated gBloc sensor blocks support a wide range of gases and enable rapid hot-swappable replacement, while automated maintenance routines reduce service time. Rugged IP65 construction, remote sensor options and flexible communications – including analogue, MODBUS and Ethernet/PoE variants – support both standalone operation and integration into complex plant-wide safety systems.

AT A GLANCE

  • Universal gas detection platform: Monitors toxic, oxygen and flammable gases using modular, plug-in gBloc sensors covering more than 20 gas variants.
  • Safety for hazardous environments: Intrinsically safe design and independent approvals support use in underground mines, tunnels and other classified areas.
  • Flexible installation and integration: Compact IP65 controller and remote heads with analogue, MODBUS, relay and optional Ethernet/PoE outputs fit new or existing systems.
  • Low-downtime maintenance: Pre-calibrated, hot-swappable sensors and embedded test routines cut on-site calibration time and reduce maintenance overhead.

Overview of Trolex Sentro X

Centralised Gas Detection for High-Risk Operations

Trolex Sentro X functions as a central controller for fixed gas detection in high-risk environments such as underground mines, tunnels and heavy industrial facilities. As the main SENTRO X controller, it provides the intelligence for coordinated monitoring, alarm generation and communications across multiple sensing points. Intrinsically safe design and independent mining approvals support deployment in areas where explosion risk, vibration and harsh operating conditions are routine.

The platform supports both General Purpose and intrinsically safe hazardous area installations, enabling consistent hardware across a site while matching the area classification of each location. This standardisation simplifies project design, spares management and training.

Modular gBloc Sensors for Wide Gas Coverage

At the core of the system is the modular gBloc sensor concept. Each pre-calibrated gBloc sensor block stores its own gas identity, calibration data and default gas type parameters. When connected, the controller automatically recognises the gBloc and applies the correct configuration, reducing the risk of set-up errors.

Support for more than 20 gas variants allows one platform to address diverse monitoring requirements, from toxic gases and oxygen deficiency or enrichment through to flammable gas hazards. High-stability electrochemical cells, infrared sensing technology and poison-resistant catalytic combustion cells are used as appropriate to provide long-term accuracy and stability for different gas types.

Platform standardisation benefits: A common controller and sensor architecture enables multiple applications to be covered with a single detector family, helping to consolidate spares, streamline training and simplify site-wide rollout.

Low-Downtime, Safer Maintenance

Trolex Sentro X is designed to minimise disruption during commissioning and service. gBloc sensors are plug-in and hot-swappable, so they can be changed without shutting down the controller or carrying out extended on-site calibration. Plug-and-play calibration data within each gBloc block significantly reduces the need for complex calibration routines at the point of use.

Embedded automatic maintenance routines test zero, span, response, signal linearity and dynamic range, supporting early detection of sensor performance drift. This combination of hot-swappable sensing, automatic verification and centralised control reduces maintenance time, site visits and associated operational downtime.

Built for Harsh, Space-Constrained and Remote Locations

The detector is engineered for the mechanical and environmental demands of mining and heavy industry. A shock-resistant housing, reinforced PC/ABS polymer construction and high vibration and impact resistance support reliable operation in harsh locations. Both controller and remote sensor units carry an IP65 ingress protection rating, resisting dust, water spray and contamination commonly encountered underground or in process areas.

The system operates across a wide industrial temperature and humidity envelope, supporting continuous monitoring in challenging climates. Compact, lightweight controller and sensor units, together with threaded M20 and M16 cable entries, offer flexible mounting options where space and existing cable routes are constrained.

A ruggedised remote sensing head extends coverage into hard-to-reach or higher risk locations up to 10 m from the controller. Armoured conduit and 4-core cable options provide robust mechanical protection for field wiring while maintaining ease of installation and service access at the controller.

Flexible Integration into Control and Safety Systems

Trolex Sentro X supports a range of outputs to fit different plant architectures. Standard interfaces include RS485 MODBUS for digital communications and analogue outputs (4–20 mA and 0.4–2 V) for direct connection to control systems, safety PLCs or SCADA platforms. Optional dual relay output cards provide programmable high and low gas alarm functions for local interlocks, shutdowns or alarm beacons.

For networked installations in hazardous areas, an optional intrinsically safe Ethernet card allows digital connectivity while maintaining compliance with area classifications. In General Purpose environments, a SENTRO X variant with Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) combines power and data on a single cable, simplifying wiring and making retrofit projects easier to execute. Optional remote configuration capability reduces the need for direct physical access, which is particularly valuable where detectors are located in hazardous or difficult-to-access positions.

Local Indication, Intelligent Alarming and Exposure Management

A graphic OLED display on the controller provides clear real-time indication of gas levels and device status in both low-light underground locations and bright surface areas. Programmable setpoint monitoring enables configurable warning and alarm thresholds aligned with site-specific safety policies and risk assessments. Configurable alarm thresholds also allow different gases or process areas to be treated according to their specific risk profile.

For toxic gases, selected gBloc sensors support Short-Term Exposure Limit (STEL) and Time-Weighted Average (TWA) functions. These features assist duty holders in monitoring employee exposure against regulatory or internal limits and in documenting compliance as part of occupational health programmes.

An optional integrated audio-visual alarm module combines high-intensity flashing LEDs with configurable audio signals. The LED warning pattern sweeps across a band of frequencies to maximise visibility in visually cluttered and noisy environments, providing unambiguous local warning to prompt timely intervention or evacuation.

Reliability, Safety Assurance and Documentation Support

Trolex Sentro X is designed as a premium, high-reliability fixed gas detection solution for continuous long-term operation. Dedicated level lock power terminals support a secure power connection, while a wide supply voltage range across intrinsically safe and General Purpose variants allows deployment within different electrical infrastructures.

Certified against the latest gas performance requirements, the system combines high accuracy detection with advanced functional outputs to support complex safety strategies. It is suitable for both underground mines and surface industrial facilities, enabling a single, universal gas detection platform across wide-ranging applications.

Available user manuals, data sheets and product and certification documentation support straightforward commissioning, operation and maintenance, as well as safety audits and regulatory reviews. Together, the hardware, sensing technologies and documentation provide a robust foundation for protecting personnel and critical assets through early warning of hazardous gas concentrations.
