MSA ALTAIR 4XR

The MSA ALTAIR 4XR uses MSA XCell® sensor technology to detect gas up to two times faster than typical industry devices, giving workers valuable extra time to react around process equipment, during confined space entry or in emergency response scenarios. Standard four-gas monitoring of combustible gases (LEL), oxygen (O₂), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) addresses common day-to-day risks, while additional toxic sensor combinations such as CO/H₂S, CO/H₂-resistant, CO/NO₂ and SO₂/H₂S-LC allow each detector to be matched to site-specific hazards.

The detector is designed to tolerate harsh industrial contaminants and repeated mechanical shock, with testing demonstrating survival of multiple 4 ft (1.2 m) drops and an incidental 25 ft (7.5 m) drop onto concrete. An IP68-rated enclosure provides complete dust protection and reliable operation after submersion in 2 m of water for up to 1 hour, making the instrument well suited to wet, dirty and washdown-prone locations such as construction sites, mines and heavy industrial plants. When paired with the MSA GALAXY® GX2 Automated Test System, bump testing and calibration can be automated and scheduled at defined times of day, helping standardise compliance across shifts and locations. More than 50 hours of datalogging and over 500 event logs provide a detailed record of gas exposures, alarms and tests, supporting regulatory inspections and post-incident investigation.

Connected versions of the MSA ALTAIR 4XR incorporate Bluetooth connectivity and an integrated RFID chip to streamline pairing with mobile devices using the ALTAIR Connect app. This connection enables real-time data sharing, remote configuration and quick updates to alarm settings and parameters from an Android smartphone, which can help reduce the need to handle each detector individually.

Through the app, supervisors can receive event notifications via text message when alarms occur, and can configure notification groups so critical information reaches the right contacts quickly. The ability to email calibration details and receive compliance reminders supports structured maintenance routines. When multiple detectors are wirelessly connected, safety managers gain better incident awareness, with visibility of alarm activity across teams engaged in tasks such as confined space entry, plant turnarounds, welding operations and emergency response.

The ALTAIR 4XR uses audible, visual and vibrating alarms to warn of hazardous gas levels, helping ensure alerts are recognised in high-noise or low-visibility environments. High-visibility LEDs and clear on-screen icons make it easy to verify instrument status at a glance. Automatic start-up self-tests check sensor, alarm and indicator functionality at power-up, helping to ensure the detector is ready for use.

MotionAlert automatically activates an alarm if the user becomes immobile, assisting in highlighting potential man-down situations to nearby colleagues. The InstantAlert feature allows the user to manually trigger an alarm to signal a perceived hazard even before gas levels reach alarm thresholds. Together, these functions support faster on-scene awareness and improved outcomes in high-risk operations, particularly for lone workers and small teams.

The MSA ALTAIR 4XR has a compact, lightweight design (approximately 4.4″ x 3.0″ x 1.4″ and 228 g), supporting comfortable all-day wear for personnel in utilities, fire service, mining, construction, general industry and oil and gas. A rechargeable Li-polymer battery provides around 24 hours of runtime with a recharge time of under 4 hours, giving reliable full-shift coverage and rapid turnaround between uses. An integrated low-battery alarm with flashing LEDs, on-screen icon, audible warning and “LOW BATT” text helps prevent unexpected shutdowns.

Versatile toxic sensor options, including H₂-resistant CO sensors and low-concentration H₂S variants, allow the same detector platform to be used in environments with hydrogen interference or low-level sulphide risks.
