Butane (C₄H₁₀) is a commonly used hydrocarbon gas found in fuel gases, petrochemical processes, and as a refrigerant propellant. While widely utilised, butane is highly flammable and forms explosive mixtures with air at relatively low concentrations. Because it is colourless and heavier than air, undetected leaks can accumulate in confined spaces, presenting serious fire and explosion risks. Continuous monitoring is therefore essential in industrial and commercial environments where butane is stored or handled.
