Mercaptans (RSH, also known as thiols) are sulfur-containing organic compounds with a strong, unpleasant odour, often described as “rotten cabbage” or “garlic-like.” They are deliberately added in small quantities to natural gas and LPG as an odorant, making gas leaks detectable by smell. However, in higher concentrations mercaptans are hazardous, flammable, and corrosive, requiring effective monitoring.
