MSA ALTAIR Pro

MSA ALTAIR Pro is a dedicated single-gas detector for continuous monitoring of toxic gases and oxygen, rather than flammable gases, in industrial areas that may be classified due to flammable atmospheres. Based on MSA’s established single-gas platform and enhanced with additional functionality, it supports applications such as confined space entry, turnarounds, welding, firefighting, plant maintenance and emergency response. A wide ambient operating range and strong resistance to dust, water and radio frequency interference make the detector suitable for sectors including oil and gas, chemicals, steel and iron, utilities, construction, mining, general industry and fire services.

Field-proven 20-series electrochemical sensors provide fast response and accurate measurement for oxygen and a range of toxic gases, including dedicated configurations for hazards such as oxygen and carbon monoxide. High-resolution measurement, such as 1 ppm resolution for carbon monoxide, supports precise exposure tracking rather than simple pass/fail indication. Oxygen models display readings in percent volume, with a standard 20.8% reference indication to confirm normal atmospheric conditions at a glance.

The large, backlit LCD presents live gas concentration, alarm status, battery level, alarm setpoints and peak readings in a clear numeric format. This helps workers and supervisors understand changing conditions and worst-case exposures, even in low visibility or smoke-filled environments.

The ALTAIR Pro uses a quadruple alarm concept to help ensure hazardous conditions are not overlooked. A high-volume audible alarm, ultra-bright wide-angle LEDs designed for visibility from around 320°, a strong vibration alarm and explicit on-screen alerts operate together to signal rising risk. Distinct visual and audible patterns differentiate low, high, time-weighted average (TWA) and short-term exposure limit (STEL) conditions, with clear "LO" and "HI" indications to support rapid recognition in stressful situations or noisy plants.

True single-button operation centralises all basic functions on one large, glove-friendly control, reducing training time and helping to minimise user error. Guided on-screen prompts support routine tasks such as alarm checks, bump checks, fresh air zero and calibration, enabling consistent procedures even for occasional users.

An integrated simple bump test or sensitivity check can be triggered with a single button press. Successful completion is recorded with a visible checkmark valid for 24 hours, providing an immediate indication that the detector has been function-tested within the current shift or day.

Automatic event and data logging are standard on the MSA ALTAIR Pro. The detector records the last 50 alarm and test events and periodically logs peak gas or low-oxygen readings at regular intervals, supporting detailed review of exposure history and alarm behaviour. This information can assist with incident investigation, exposure analysis and demonstrating adherence to internal procedures or external requirements.

A built-in infrared communication port allows contactless transfer of data to a PC using MSA Link software, avoiding physical connectors that can wear or compromise sealing. The same interface supports adjustment of alarm setpoints to match site or regional standards, including alternative alarm combinations for gases such as carbon monoxide. Compatibility with ALTAIR QuickCheck test stations and the GALAXY automated calibration and record-keeping system simplifies bump testing, calibration and documentation for large fleets, without relying on a permanently connected PC.

The ALTAIR Pro housing combines extra-thick, rubberised armour with metal screw inserts to maintain structural stability over extended use. High impact resistance, including tested drops of up to approximately 3 m, supports reliable performance in demanding field conditions. An IP67 ingress protection rating delivers dust-tight sealing and resistance to water immersion, while strong protection against radio frequency interference helps maintain measurement stability around radios and electronic equipment.

These design choices contribute to a long service life and help reduce the total cost of ownership, particularly on sites where detectors are routinely exposed to mechanical shock, dust, moisture or electromagnetic noise.

Compact dimensions and a lightweight design make the MSA ALTAIR Pro suitable for all-day personal wear. A standard rugged suspension clip secures the detector to clothing, belts or safety harnesses, keeping it close to the breathing zone. Optional accessories such as cell phone-style clips, lanyard clips and hardhat clips enable consistent use of the same detector platform across different tasks and personal protective equipment configurations, helping to reduce SKUs and simplify site standards.

The detector is designed to minimise downtime and simplify servicing. Electrochemical sensors are easily replaceable, allowing rapid turnaround without lengthy off-site repair. A commercially available CR2 battery provides typical service life of more than one year based on an 8-hour-per-day working week and can be replaced on site without special tools. Straightforward access to manuals, quick start guides, technical bulletins and safety literature supports correct set-up and ongoing use.
