Overview of Honeywell Sensepoint XCD
Robust fixed-point protection for hazardous environments
Honeywell Sensepoint XCD is engineered as a common platform for fixed gas detection in hazardous areas, delivering continuous monitoring of flammable, toxic and oxygen gas hazards. It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations and performs reliably in harsh industrial environments where explosive atmospheres and gas releases are a persistent risk.
Explosion-proof housings in corrosion-resistant materials, combined with a high ingress protection rating, provide dust-tight and water-resistant performance. A wide operating temperature range supports deployment in extreme climates, from cold outdoor pipe racks to hot process areas. With approvals for use in hazardous areas from major global schemes, Sensepoint XCD supports deployment on international projects and across multi-site operations.
Flexible gas detection to match the application
Sensepoint XCD is available in dedicated flammable, toxic and oxygen versions to align the detector with specific process hazards. Flammable gas detection options use catalytic bead or infrared sensor technologies, allowing selection of the sensing principle that best matches the process conditions and potential poisons. Toxic and oxygen versions use electrochemical sensors, including Surecellâ„¢ technology, for key toxic gases and oxygen deficiency or enrichment monitoring.
A remote flammable detector configuration allows the sensing head to be mounted up to 30 m (100 ft) from the transmitter. This suits high or low level detection points, concealed locations, external ducting or areas with elevated temperatures, while the transmitter remains in a convenient, accessible position. The result is improved usability and safer access for personnel without compromising coverage at the true point of risk.
Simplified installation and system integration
Sensepoint XCD is designed to minimise installation time and integration effort. Detectors are supplied pre-configured, and removable plug/socket terminal blocks, an integral mounting plate and versatile brackets support surface, horizontal pipe or vertical pipe mounting. Certified cable or conduit entries are provided to align with regional installation practices.
The detector offers a standard 4–20 mA analogue output with selectable sink or source operation for compatibility with a wide range of control systems. RS485 MODBUS RTU provides remote diagnostics, configuration and multidrop architectures, helping reduce cabling in larger plants. Two programmable alarm relays plus a programmable fault relay support local alarms, shutdown functions and interlocks as required by site safety philosophy.
Non-intrusive, one-person operation and maintenance
Sensepoint XCD supports safe, efficient servicing in classified areas. Non-intrusive operation via external magnetic switches enables configuration and calibration without opening the enclosure, helping maintain the integrity of explosion-proof joints and reducing the need for hot work permits. One-person setup and maintenance further reduce labour demand and service windows.
Plug-in, replaceable sensors allow fast swap-out in the field, while long-life, poison-resistant catalytic bead and poison-immune infrared options, together with robust electrochemical sensors, are designed to extend service intervals. Auto-inhibit of outputs during configuration and maintenance helps prevent false alarms or unintended activations at the control panel, reducing nuisance trips and operational disruption.
Clear status indication and configurable control
The tri-colour backlit LCD provides immediate visual feedback on detector status using numerical values, a bar graph and intuitive icons. A green backlight indicates normal operation, flashing yellow denotes a fault condition and flashing red signals an alarm. The display remains readable from distance and in low-light conditions, supporting quick situational awareness for operators and maintenance teams.
Through the local interface, parameters such as scale, range, relay operation, alarm set points and electronic tag numbers can be adjusted. This configurability supports structured asset management, especially on larger sites where field device tagging, consistent alarm settings and clear documentation are critical for ongoing compliance and maintenance planning.
Versatile accessories and platform standardisation
A wide range of Honeywell accessories extends the application flexibility of Sensepoint XCD and reduces the need for multiple detector types. Calibration cups, collecting cones, duct mounting kits, sunshade and deluge protection, and various junction boxes support installation in ducts, exposed outdoor locations and high or low mounting points. Design features and accessory options also support applications with lighter-than-air gases and high-temperature sensing points when combined with the remote flammable sensor configuration.
A weatherproof cap is included for additional protection in harsh outdoor environments, helping maintain detector performance in rain, dust and washdown conditions. Together, these options make Sensepoint XCD suitable for both new build and retrofit projects and enable standardisation on a single detector platform across mixed plant layouts, reducing training requirements and simplifying spares management.
Proven across multiple industries worldwide
Honeywell Sensepoint XCD is applied widely in industries such as oil and gas, chemical, pharmaceutical, power generation, food and beverage, and wastewater treatment. Its common transmitter platform across gas types, combined with global availability, documentation and technical support, streamlines specification and roll-out across complex sites and international projects.
Multiple variants are available to align with gas type, housing material, approval requirements and communication needs. Combined with field device tagging options and worldwide supply through specialist distributors, Sensepoint XCD supports the development of robust, standardised gas detection strategies for facilities operating under demanding safety and regulatory regimes.
