Overview of Crowcon Multiscan++PK

Purpose-built control for car park gas detection

Crowcon Multiscan++PK is engineered as the central control element for fixed gas detection systems in car parks, tunnels and similar enclosed parking structures. It is designed to comply with European Standard EN 50545‑1 for gas detection in car parks and tunnels, providing a clear framework for projects where CO and NO2 monitoring is mandatory. By focusing on these key exhaust gases, the panel delivers targeted control of ventilation, alarm signalling and information displays, supporting both occupant safety and efficient air handling.

The platform is suited to new builds and refurbishment projects that must demonstrate adherence to EN 50545‑1 and SIL2 functional safety requirements. Its operating temperature and humidity ranges are aligned with typical indoor and covered car park environments, while EMC-approved design supports reliable operation in electrically noisy commercial or industrial locations.

Scalable architecture for small to very large sites

Multiscan++PK is available in multiple capacity variants, allowing the system to be scaled from small, single-level car parks through to extensive, multi-level complexes. It supports up to 256 gas detectors and, in certain configurations, up to 264 inputs and 520 outputs, making it suitable for distributed systems with significant control requirements.

The modular architecture supports extensive use of remote input and output modules, including dedicated expansion cards and high-safety output modules. This enables incremental growth as site needs change, without replacing the core control panel. Multi-panel arrangements and remote RTU units with local LCD displays and relays allow distributed visualisation and control, so operators can align system topology with the physical layout of the parking facility while retaining coordinated management.

Flexible connectivity and straightforward integration

Crowcon Multiscan++PK is designed for integration into wider building and safety systems. It accepts both RS485 addressable detector loops and 4–20 mA analogue inputs via remote modules, making it compatible with a broad range of devices, including SMART P‑1, SMART P‑2 and SMART‑P gas detectors as part of a complete car park solution.

Up to four RS485 (EIA‑485) serial ports can be configured as open bus lines or closed galvanically isolated loops, improving noise immunity and providing design flexibility. Local configuration, supervision and data retrieval are supported via USB or RS232/RS485 connections, while an optional TCP/IP interface enables LAN connectivity and remote monitoring over networks.

Communication via Modbus and/or Galileo protocols simplifies integration with building management systems, ventilation controls, fire panels and central monitoring platforms. This allows real-time gas status and event data to be shared across the site, helping to coordinate responses and reduce the complexity of parallel control schemes.

Advanced control, alarm logic and staged ventilation

The panel incorporates a powerful microprocessor that supports sophisticated control logic and diagnostics. Each detector channel can be assigned three independent alarm thresholds, enabling carefully staged responses such as progressive fan start-up, activation of warning signage and escalation to higher-level alarms.

Time-averaging of the first and second alarm thresholds over configurable periods helps to filter short-lived gas peaks and reduce nuisance activations, while a faster-acting third threshold with adjustable delay provides prompt response to critical conditions. A large pool of freely configurable outputs, including up to 512 remotely configurable outputs and on-board relays, allows bespoke control sequences to be implemented in line with the site’s ventilation strategy and safety philosophy.

Diagnostics, visibility and incident traceability

Continuous self-diagnostics and extensive self-testing are integral to the Multiscan++PK design. The system monitors its internal operation and connected field devices, helping to detect and localise possible faults or failures so that any reduction in coverage is identified and addressed quickly. This supports continuous protection against dangerous build-up of CO and NO2.

Clear, real-time status information is provided via a backlit graphic LCD display and 18 status LEDs, giving at-a-glance indication of power, alarm, fault and operating states. An internal event log, viewable on the panel or via software, supports incident reconstruction, maintenance planning and audit requirements. A parallel printer port allows real-time hard-copy printouts and reports from the event memory where permanent paper records are required.

Robust enclosures and adaptable system layouts

To suit different installation practices, Crowcon Multiscan++PK is available in IP65 ABS wall-mounted enclosures with an integrated power supply and provision for backup batteries, or as 19″ 6U rack-mount versions designed for use with external 24 V dc supplies. IP65-rated enclosures and accessory boxes protect electronics in harsher or dusty areas within parking structures, while the overall system architecture supports use in both classified and non-classified areas as required.

Support for numerous remote I/O modules, dedicated accessory boards and remote RTU units simplifies expansion and customisation, allowing a single control platform to be deployed across a wide range of car park layouts. Multi-language documentation and region-appropriate datasheets assist with global deployment. Leveraging Sensitron and Crowcon expertise in fixed gas detection, Crowcon Multiscan++PK provides a robust, scalable and integration-friendly foundation for car park gas monitoring and ventilation control where safety and regulatory compliance are critical.
