Crowcon Multiscan 8+

Crowcon Multiscan 8+ gives small industrial plants and localised gas detection systems the level of overview usually associated with larger installations. By consolidating flammable, toxic, refrigerant and oxygen hazards from multiple detectors into a single control panel, it provides a clear picture of gas conditions and enables rapid, coordinated responses to alarms. This centralisation supports more informed decision-making, helps reduce the likelihood and severity of incidents, and underpins safe, continuous operation.

The Multiscan 8+ panel provides eight analogue 4–20 mA inputs as standard, enabling straightforward connection of nearby detectors. Where additional coverage is required, optional remote analogue input modules extend capacity to 16 or 24 channels without replacing the core controller. Each input can be configured by gas type, allowing a single, compact panel to manage mixed hazards such as combustible gases, toxic gases, refrigerants and oxygen depletion or enrichment. This flexibility suits diverse applications including machinery spaces, small production areas, plant rooms and utilities, while keeping the control architecture standardised.

SIL1 approval provides a recognised functional safety foundation, supporting risk reduction measures and safety instrumented functions based on the panel. ATEX certification confirms suitability for use in potentially explosive atmospheres when applied within the certified system design, and EMC compliance supports stable operation in electrically noisy environments. Together, these characteristics help operators align with regulatory frameworks and insurance requirements for gas detection and safety management across both classified and non-classified areas.

Effective gas safety depends on timely, unambiguous information. The Multiscan 8+ uses a backlit LCD display to show gas concentrations, alarm thresholds and status information, complemented by front-panel LEDs for alarms, faults and power. An internal buzzer provides immediate audible notification of alarm and fault conditions. Six on-board relay outputs enable direct activation of beacons, sounders, ventilation and safety interlocks, and relay capacity can be expanded significantly using optional output boards. This allows the panel to trigger ventilation systems or emergency shutdowns automatically on alarm, supporting protection of people, plant and the environment.

Multiscan 8+ is designed as an integration-friendly platform within broader safety and automation architectures. An RS485 open bus supports connection of additional detectors and remote I/O modules, including addressable gas detectors connected in a daisy-chain. Modbus RTU over RS485 enables straightforward interface with building management systems and PLCs, while field devices can use Galileo or Modbus protocols within the Sensitron / Crowcon ecosystem. A selectable USB/RS232 serial port allows direct PC connection for configuration, supervision and diagnostics. Optional accessories — such as TCP/IP interfaces, relay boards, remote displays and dedicated power units — extend reach and functionality, and efficient Modbus supervision allows multiple panels to be monitored centrally.

The front panel layout is designed to keep day-to-day operation simple and controlled. Eight push-buttons provide direct access for acknowledging and resetting alarms, navigating menus, testing LEDs and initiating test functions. A three-position key switch manages user levels and protects critical settings by restricting configuration changes to authorised personnel. Sensitron configuration software supports rapid commissioning and later adjustment as processes change.

Maintenance features are focused on minimising disruption. Individual channels can be temporarily unset to allow field work on detectors while the remaining system stays fully operational. Built-in channel test functions allow verification of detector signalling and system response directly from the panel. Automatic self-tests and clear fault notifications improve diagnostic capability and help reduce undetected failures. An internal clock with backup maintains accurate time stamping during power loss, ensuring that event logs are reliable for troubleshooting and compliance records, whether viewed at the panel or via software.

The Multiscan 8+ is housed in a robust ABS enclosure suitable for industrial service and typical plant temperature and humidity conditions. Multiple cable knockouts on the top and rear of the cabinet simplify field wiring, and wall-mounting using standard fixings keeps installation straightforward and space-efficient in control rooms, plant rooms and local panels. A wide-range AC mains input feeds an internal power supply that delivers 27.6 V for detectors and system electronics, while space for two 12 VDC, 7 Ah batteries supports continued operation during mains failures. Relay contact ratings are suitable for driving typical alarm devices and control circuits, helping to reduce the need for additional interface hardware.

As part of the broader Sensitron / Crowcon fixed gas detection ecosystem, the Multiscan 8+ is designed to work with compatible detectors, remote RTU units, I/O modules and power solutions. Remote RTU units with LCD displays can mirror events and provide further inputs and outputs over RS485, extending monitoring and control to remote locations without replicating a full control panel. This platform approach enables consistent hardware, configuration and user interfaces across sites, simplifying training, reducing system complexity and supporting long-term lifecycle management of gas detection installations.
