Crowcon PL4+

The Crowcon PL4+ provides a central hub for gas safety in small systems and plants, including marine applications such as ships and offshore platforms. It accepts standard 4–20 mA signals from flammable, toxic and oxygen gas detectors, consolidating up to four channels as standard and up to eight with an expansion module. This enables a single panel to supervise multiple areas or gas types, simplifying system architecture and supporting consistent safety management across a site.

As a dedicated gas detection controller, PL4+ combines continuous monitoring, alarm processing and control logic in one unit. Its triple-threshold architecture supports staged alarm strategies, such as pre-alarm, main alarm and high alarm, allowing responses to be aligned with site procedures and escalation plans.

PL4+ is SIL1 functional safety certified for use in safety-related applications, giving a documented basis for risk reduction measures. ATEX certification and conformity with relevant EMC standards support use in classified and electrically noisy environments, helping to maintain dependable performance where gas hazards and interference risks are present.

A microprocessor-based architecture processes detector signals accurately and drives alarms and outputs when thresholds are reached. Protected power lines and delayed fuses on both main supply and detector outputs enhance system robustness, while an optional internal backup battery maintains operation during mains failures so that gas monitoring and alarming continue during power disturbances.

PL4+ is designed as a versatile platform for integration with fixed detectors and wider safety systems. Four analogue 4–20 mA inputs are provided as standard for straightforward connection of detectors; a PL4/ESP (STPL4/ESP) expansion module increases capacity to eight channels, allowing consolidation of multiple rooms, decks or process areas into one panel.

On the output side, five onboard relays provide three dedicated alarm thresholds (AL1, AL2, AL3), one fault relay and one freely programmable relay. When combined with remote and expansion modules, the system offers up to 21 freely programmable outputs, enabling targeted control of beacons, sounders, fans, shutoff valves and other devices. An expansion board adds 16 open-collector outputs, which can be converted into relay contacts via an optional 16-relay module to deliver additional switching capacity for complex installations.

For panel builders and OEMs, the DIN-rail variant (STPL4+D) offers four channels with triple thresholds, expandable via STG/IN8S input cards or RS485 connections to detectors. A USB port and optional Windows-based configuration software support PC-based commissioning, configuration and data access within custom cabinets.

The PL4+ front panel is designed to give operators clear, immediate visibility of gas status and system health. A two-line LCD display presents gas concentration values and alarm set points, while dedicated mode LEDs indicate power, fault, low battery, alarms and auxiliary outputs. Seven status LEDs – one green for power, two yellow for low battery and fault, and four red for alarms/auxiliary – provide an at-a-glance overview of operating state.

An internal acoustic buzzer (approximately 70 dB at 1 m) delivers an audible indication of gas alarms and system faults. ACK and RESET buttons on the front panel allow alarm acknowledgement and system reset directly at the unit, supporting timely responses without accessing separate control equipment.

A robust ABS enclosure with an IP65 rating protects PL4+ against dust and water ingress, making it suitable for harsh industrial environments and marine applications. The wide operating and storage temperature ranges, together with a broad non-condensing humidity range, support deployment in varied climates and sheltered outdoor or coastal locations.

The PL4+ version incorporates a 12 V, 1.5 A power supply that feeds both the panel and connected detectors, simplifying power distribution and reducing the need for additional supplies. An output supply of 13.8 Vdc supports detectors and associated field devices, while optional 12 Vdc, 7 Ah backup battery capability helps maintain operation during mains interruptions. Low power consumption further assists in reducing running costs over the life of the system.

A large, wall-mountable cabinet (426 x 288 x 148 mm) with a manageable weight of 3.4 kg (without battery) facilitates straightforward installation and wiring. A key-operated selector provides three operating modes – System ON, System OFF and Programming – controlling access to configuration functions. In Programming mode, alarm thresholds, outputs and operating parameters can be configured from the front panel, allowing on-site adjustment without specialist tools.

Event logging functionality supports review of system history, with logs viewable at the panel and via compatible software where supported. Remote I/O modules and RTUs can be deployed to distribute inputs and outputs closer to field devices, reducing cable runs and supporting modular expansion. IP65 ABS accessory enclosures are available for DIN-rail versions and RTU modules to extend environmental protection to distributed components.

The PL4+ forms part of a broader family of control panels designed to serve both small and large systems in classified and non-classified areas. Supplied by a long-established gas detection specialist within a major safety group, it offers a reliable, integration-friendly platform for centralising detection, alarming and control functions.
