Crowcon Smart 3-R

Crowcon Smart 3-R provides fixed-point monitoring of explosive, toxic and refrigerant gases in safe (non-hazardous) areas such as refrigeration machinery rooms, cold stores, laboratories, light industrial spaces and technical plant rooms. Its gas coverage spans flammable gases, common toxics, oxygen, CO₂, SF₆ and a wide range of F-Gas and natural refrigerants, enabling a single detector type to address multiple leak and process risks. This supports continuous protection of personnel, plant and building fabric where early leak detection is critical.

Smart 3-R is available with catalytic, infrared (IR), electrochemical and MPS sensors to match different gas hazards and applications. Catalytic versions provide accurate, selective flammable gas detection, including measurement ranges up to 0–100% LFL for key hydrocarbons. IR versions offer high stability and long sensor life, making them well suited to refrigerant and CO₂ monitoring, including ppm-level detection for refrigeration plants. Electrochemical variants cover major toxic gases with tailored ranges, while the overall platform supports both traditional HFC refrigerants and newer low-GWP and natural alternatives. This flexibility helps standardise on one detector family across mixed-gas, multi-technology installations.

The detector is designed specifically for refrigerant leak detection in plant and machinery rooms and supports compliance with key refrigeration and F-Gas-related standards. Its fixed-point architecture and dedicated refrigerant capability help operators meet legal and code requirements for leak detection, emergency ventilation and plant room safety. Coverage of both legacy and low-GWP F-Gas refrigerants, alongside natural refrigerants, helps future-proof installations as systems are upgraded or replaced. Compliance with relevant EMC and electrical safety standards underpins reliable operation within wider building services and electrical infrastructures.

Crowcon Smart 3-R integrates easily with existing gas detection panels and building management systems. Standard 4–20 mA analogue output and optional RS485 serial communication enable connection to a wide range of third-party equipment, including Modbus-ready control panels. Three configurable relays, with contact ratings suitable for typical plant interfaces, allow direct control of external alarms, fans or shutdown systems so that local gas detection can initiate immediate mitigation actions. Multiple cable entries and optional remote sensor head versions support flexible mounting, including at difficult or inaccessible leak points while keeping the main enclosure accessible for service.

A multicolour circular LED ring and smart LEDs provide clear, at-a-glance indication of normal, alarm and fault conditions. An integrated internal buzzer, with sound level suited to typical plant environments, delivers audible warning of gas alarms and faults. These visual and audible cues help operators and maintenance teams recognise hazardous conditions quickly, supporting timely intervention, equipment shutdown and safe evacuation where required, even in busy or noisy technical spaces.

Smart 3-R has been developed to minimise time on site. Sensor replacement is straightforward, reducing downtime when sensing elements reach end of life. Configuration, zero and span calibration, and 4–20 mA adjustment are performed via compatible STS/CKD keypads with displays, simplifying commissioning across multiple detectors. Continuous self-diagnostics provide early warning of faults, allowing maintenance to be planned rather than reactive. Optional data logging through compatible interfaces supports compliance records and post-event analysis, while firmware upgrade capability on suitable versions enables feature updates without replacing installed hardware.

The detector’s IP42-rated polycarbonate enclosure offers protection against dripping water and small solid particles while remaining corrosion-resistant, making it suitable for indoor plant and machinery rooms. Compact dimensions and low weight simplify mounting in congested plant spaces, and non-condensing humidity tolerance and broad operating temperature capabilities across many versions support use in cold stores and damp technical areas. Optional low-voltage DC and mains AC power variants allow Smart 3-R to be deployed in facilities with different electrical infrastructures, with the AC version suited to sites without existing DC loops.
