Description

Crowcon Detective + is a transportable, multi-gas area monitor for hazardous industrial sites, combining 360° visibility with flexible networking.

Crowcon Detective + is a rugged, transportable area gas monitor designed to protect work zones, access points and work teams in hazardous industrial environments. Monitoring up to four gases simultaneously and available in multiple toxic configurations, it provides flexible coverage for changing tasks and temporary worksites. A stable tripod frame, powerful 360° audible and visual alarms and long battery runtime support continuous operation, while optional wired or wireless networking allows multiple units to act together for perimeter and fence-line monitoring in demanding applications.

AT A GLANCE

  • Flexible multi-gas coverage: Monitors up to four gases in configurable 3- or 4-gas setups, with additional toxic sensor options available.
  • Rugged tripod construction: Highly visible, IP65-rated housing with raised sensors and protective frame for harsh outdoor and industrial conditions.
  • Scalable area protection: Operates standalone or as part of cabled or wireless networks so alarms propagate across multiple Detective + units.
  • Long runtime and easy deployment: Extended battery options, fast-response sensing and optional sampling pump support continuous, low-disruption monitoring.

Overview of Crowcon Detective +

Rugged, Transportable Area Protection for High-Risk Sites

Crowcon Detective + is engineered specifically for perimeter and area gas monitoring, providing a dedicated solution for zones where personal detectors alone may not give sufficient coverage. Positioned on a stable tripod frame, it delivers highly visible 360° gas detection around temporary worksites, access points and confined space entries. Typical applications include offshore platforms, oil and gas installations, water treatment works and chemical or hydrocarbon processing facilities, where mobile work teams and changing conditions demand flexible but robust gas monitoring.

The detector supports 3-gas and 4-gas configurations, commonly monitoring methane, oxygen, hydrogen sulphide and carbon monoxide, with additional toxic gas cell combinations available on request. This allows a single platform to be tailored to different process areas and tasks, reducing the need for multiple specialist instruments.

Advanced Sensing for Performance and Uptime

Detective + offers advanced infrared sensor options for flammable gas or carbon dioxide. These sensors provide extended measuring capability and are immune to poisoning effects that can impact catalytic sensors, significantly improving sensor life and helping to keep instruments in service for longer between sensor changes. Expected lifetimes of around five years for flammable/IR sensors, three years for toxic sensors and at least two years for oxygen support planned maintenance and help reduce whole-life costs.

The detector is suitable for monitoring both oxygen depletion and oxygen enrichment, supporting safe entry and ongoing work in confined or controlled environments. Typical response times are around 20 seconds for flammable and toxic gases and 10 seconds for oxygen, enabling earlier warning of developing hazards and supporting faster decision-making by safety teams.

Built to Withstand Harsh Industrial Conditions

A robust tripod-style frame sits at the core of the Detective + design. The raised detector body and raised sensor apertures shield sensitive components from water ingress and physical impact, while still allowing free access of gas from all directions. The three-leg configuration delivers high physical visibility and provides a 360° gas inlet path, improving detection capability even in variable wind conditions.

Choice of fixed or folding legs, in plastic or metal, allows the platform to be matched to handling and storage requirements without compromising stability. Despite its compact footprint for an area monitor, the unit remains secure on uneven ground. An IP65 ingress protection rating supports reliable operation in dusty and wet environments typically found on process plants, construction sites and outdoor works.

Highly Visible Alarms and Continuous Confidence

To ensure alarms are not missed in noisy process areas, Detective + incorporates a very loud 104 dBA wailing omni-directional siren, providing clear audible warning across the surrounding area. Multiple vivid red LED clusters around the top of the unit provide true 360° visual alarms, helping ensure that warnings are visible from any direction and at a distance.

Distinct LED patterns indicate normal operation, alarm and low battery status at a glance, reducing the need for close inspection and menu navigation. An audible and visual confidence bleep (or “confidence blip”) confirms that the detector is powered and actively monitoring, which is particularly useful on larger sites with several units deployed around a perimeter or across multiple levels.

Standalone or Networked Perimeter Monitoring

Detective + can be used as a single, standalone area monitor or connected to other units to build a perimeter or fence-style warning system. Up to 12 detectors can be hard-wired using interconnecting cables, typically spaced up to around 100m apart. In a linked configuration, when one unit detects gas and enters alarm, all connected units alarm together, extending warning coverage and giving a clearer picture of the incident location.

Where cabling is impractical or work areas move frequently, the Detective Wireless / Detective NET module replaces cables with a 433 MHz wireless mesh network. Using RICOCHET self-healing technology, the mesh automatically reroutes signals if a path becomes obstructed, maintaining communication resilience as site layouts change. Wireless networks can include up to 25 Detective + units, and a Detective Wireless module can also be used as a repeater or mounted remotely via a short cable run to improve signal quality in obstructed or confined locations.

Sampling Options, Runtime and Field Usability

For applications requiring remote or localised sampling, Detective + is available with an optional built-in electric pump, enabling faster gas response and sampling from specific points such as pits, voids or enclosed spaces. Where a pump is not specified, manual aspiration sampling remains available, providing flexibility in how samples are drawn.

Two sealed lead-acid battery pack options support extended deployment without frequent charging. The standard pack provides approximately 36 hours of operation, while the high-capacity option delivers around 60 hours. Both 6V packs (7.2Ah and 12Ah) are designed for straightforward replacement, helping maintenance teams manage fleet availability efficiently.

Clear Data, Configuration and Calibration Support

A high-contrast LCD with backlight displays up to four gases simultaneously, alongside current, time-weighted average and peak values. Additional information such as battery status, real-time clock, elapsed time, calibration state and configuration data supports quick status checks during inspections and audits.

An RS232 PC interface allows configuration of alarm thresholds, clock settings, datalogging intervals and password protection. Associated PC software presents logged data graphically and enables export to spreadsheet formats, supporting investigation of exposure history, incident review and compliance reporting. Calibration can be carried out via the instrument’s internal menu, through the PC software or using Crowcon’s CheckBox IMH management system, allowing both ad hoc field calibration and more centrally managed programmes.

Compliance and Lifecycle Support

Detective + is approved for use in hazardous areas and complies with key gas detection, safety and EMC standards, underpinning its suitability for regulated industrial sites. Each new instrument is supplied with a calibration certificate traceable to national standards when purchased from approved distributors, supporting site quality systems and audit requirements.

Authorised distributors and service partners provide portable and fixed gas detection servicing, hire options and training, helping organisations manage the full lifecycle of their monitoring equipment. Building on the established Triple Plus+ and earlier Detective platforms, Crowcon Detective + offers a versatile, widely configurable transportable area gas monitoring solution for demanding atmospheres.
