Overview of Crowcon T4x
Rugged multi-gas protection for challenging hazardous areas
Crowcon T4x is designed as a go-to personal multi-gas detector for workers in demanding environments, including Zone 0 locations and confined spaces. It continuously monitors carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, flammable gases and oxygen levels to address the four most common gas hazards encountered during confined space entry and general work involving oxygen-related risks. A compact, lightweight form factor with integrated alligator clip and tethering loop makes it comfortable for all-day wear while remaining securely attached to clothing or harnesses.
The detector holds multiple global intrinsic safety and hazardous area approvals, supporting deployment across international operations. A rugged enclosure with thick integrated anti-shock rubber, 4m concrete drop testing and independent IP65 and IP67 ingress protection ratings ensures resistance to impact, dust and water. This robustness underpins uninterrupted working where devices are routinely exposed to harsh mechanical and environmental conditions.
Next-generation flammable gas sensing with True LEL™ accuracy
At the core of Crowcon T4x is MPS™ (Molecular Property Spectrometer) technology for flammable gas detection. Unlike many conventional flammable sensors, the MPS™ sensor accurately detects and measures more than 15 flammable gases in any mix with a single device, delivering True LEL™ accuracy even when multiple flammable gases are present. This wide gas coverage reduces the need to configure or calibrate detectors to specific flammable gas types, simplifying fleet management and helping maintain consistent protection across diverse sites.
The MPS™ sensor is inherently poisoning-resistant, with zero risk of sensor performance loss from common environmental toxins or contaminants. Sensitivity remains stable over time, avoiding the progressive degradation often associated with traditional catalytic sensors. As a result, Crowcon T4x eliminates or significantly reduces flammable sensor poisoning and cuts sensor replacements by around 75%, supporting higher detector availability and reducing maintenance interventions.
Lower total cost of ownership through long-life sensing
Crowcon T4x is engineered to reduce lifetime ownership costs compared with the original T4. Across a five-year period, it can deliver more than a 25% reduction in total cost of ownership, driven by extended sensor lifetimes and fewer consumable parts. Alongside the MPS™ sensor, the optional Long-Life Oxygen (LLO2) sensor provides an industry-leading five-year warranty and is completely lead-free, improving RoHS compliance, reducing environmental impact and easing end-of-life recycling.
A dual toxic sensor option combines CO and H2S into a single three-year life sensor while maintaining performance equivalent to individual sensors. This consolidation reduces the number of sensors that need replacing, simplifies spares strategies and helps keep more detectors in service. Across a fleet, the long-life, lead-free oxygen sensor and reduced sensor replacement demand save approximately 12g of lead per detector and help minimise waste.
Clear safety status and simple, gloved operation
Crowcon T4x is built around intuitive operation to minimise training requirements. A single large button and logical menu structure allow full operation while wearing gloves, supporting users who handle the detector infrequently or in cold conditions. The large, front-mounted backlit display presents clear gas readings and status information in low light, and an optional 180° screen flip keeps information readable when the detector is worn on different parts of the body or on harnesses.
To provide immediate assurance, T4x incorporates a traffic light style Positive Safety indicator. Bright green or red LEDs give clear at-a-glance confirmation of operational and compliance status, even from a distance. When hazards are detected, a triple alarm system comprising a loud >95dB audible alarm, bright red/blue visual indicators and an integrated vibrating alert helps ensure personnel receive timely warnings in noisy or low-visibility environments.
Extended runtime and reliable performance over long shifts
The rechargeable Li-ion battery in Crowcon T4x delivers more than 35 hours of operation, roughly double the runtime of the original T4. This extended battery life supports multiple or longer shifts between charges and reduces the need for mid-shift battery changes or spare devices. A recharge time of around 5.5 hours allows detectors to be fully replenished between shifts, maintaining high fleet availability.
T4x operates across a wide temperature range and in high humidity, supporting use in varied climates and both indoor and outdoor applications. Combined with its robust mechanical design, this environmental resilience gives consistent performance even under prolonged exposure to dust, moisture and rough handling.
Smarter exposure tracking and fleet-wide compliance support
The TWA Resume function in Crowcon T4x enhances toxic gas exposure tracking. It continues time-weighted average calculations over an entire shift, even if the detector is switched off during breaks or transport. This supports accurate exposure reporting when personnel move between locations and do not operate a device continuously, making it easier to demonstrate compliance with occupational exposure limits.
The detector logs approximately 130 hours of data and up to 3,500 events for traceability and incident review. Data transfer via a USB communications lead, together with compatibility with Crowcon Connect and Portables Pro software, supports straightforward configuration, servicing and fleet-level analysis. These tools help safety managers standardise settings, verify calibration status and maintain alignment with site policies across large populations of detectors.
Flexible maintenance, charging and deployment options
Crowcon T4x is supplied with a bump/calibration plate to support routine functional checks with test gas. It is compatible with the I-Test automated bump test and calibration station, enabling consistent site procedures and simplifying proof of compliance with internal bump test and calibration policies. Optional clip-on external filter plates are available to protect sensors in dusty or dirty environments, further extending sensor life.
Multiple charging solutions, including a single-unit cradle, 10-way charger and vehicle charger, support a wide range of deployment models from small teams to large multi-site fleets. With flexible 2-, 3- and 4-gas configuration options, organisations can tailor setups to specific applications while standardising on a single detector platform to simplify training, spares management and support.
Hydrogen-ready and more sustainable by design
The hydrogen-ready MPS™ sensor makes Crowcon T4x suitable for environments where hydrogen hazards are present or emerging, supporting evolving industrial and energy applications. In parallel, the lead-free long-life oxygen sensor and fewer sensor replacements reduce hazardous material usage and waste across the detector fleet.
By combining the proven durability and usability of the original T4 range with enhanced sensing technology, longer runtimes and sustainability benefits, Crowcon T4x provides a robust, low-maintenance and environmentally responsible solution for modern personal gas detection programmes.
