Description
Honeywell Searchzone Sonik is an ultrasonic gas leak detector for high-pressure installations in hazardous outdoor areas, delivering ultra-fast, low-maintenance acoustic detection.
Honeywell Searchzone Sonik is an ultrasonic acoustic gas leak detector that listens for the sound of high-pressure gas leaks instead of waiting for gas to reach a sensor. By detecting the ultrasonic noise generated at the leak source, it reacts in around one second and remains effective where wind, ventilation or weather disperse gas. With wide area coverage, rugged hazardous-area construction and no routine field calibration, it strengthens fixed gas detection strategies in demanding energy and process environments while supporting higher uptime and lower maintenance overhead.
AT A GLANCE
- Ultrasonic leak detection for high-pressure gas: Detects leaks via acoustic energy, even when gas never reaches point or open-path detectors.

Overview of Honeywell Searchzone Sonik
Acoustic gas leak detection where traditional methods struggle
Honeywell Searchzone Sonik is designed as an acoustic leak detector specifically optimised for high-pressure gases. Instead of measuring gas concentration, it monitors the ultrasonic sound signature produced when pressurised gas escapes. This allows detection of leaks even when wind, forced ventilation or open air disperse gas before traditional point or open-path gas detectors can respond. Used as a complementary technology within a layered fixed gas detection system, it helps close coverage gaps around high-pressure equipment and strengthens overall plant protection.
The detector is unaffected by environmental conditions such as wind, rain, fog or heavy ventilation, making it particularly valuable in outdoor and ventilated installations. Typical applications include compressors, turbines, valves, wellheads, metering skids and processing units, as well as offshore platforms, onshore refineries, petrochemical plants, gas storage facilities, gas turbine power plants, pipelines and loading or unloading areas.
Configurable coverage for complex plant layouts
Each Searchzone Sonik unit typically provides a wide on-axis detection radius of around 20Â m (65Â ft), enabling large area coverage per detector and helping reduce the number of devices required. The detector can be mounted in any orientation without affecting performance, giving designers flexibility to cover irregular structures, congested pipe racks and hard-to-access locations.
A universal adjustable mounting bracket with three graduated degrees of freedom allows precise alignment on likely leak points, while a platform of wall, pole and strut mounting accessories supports consistent hardware deployment across a site. Normal (Standard) mode provides a broad ±90° cone of detection for wide-angle coverage in relatively low-noise areas. Focus Mode narrows the field of view to around ±20°, applying specialised algorithms to concentrate on specific hazards and reject irrelevant background noise. This configurability allows coverage to be tailored to quiet zones and noisy rotating-equipment areas alike.
Fast response, stable operation and reduced maintenance
Searchzone Sonik delivers a sensor reaction time of around one second and a warm-up time under five minutes, helping bring detectors into full operation quickly after power-up or maintenance. Advanced spectral analysis and intelligent background noise algorithms distinguish true leak signatures from routine plant noise, supporting high sensitivity with reduced nuisance alarms. Recommended alarm settings based on approximately 6Â dB above background noise help commissioning teams tune setpoints to site-specific acoustic conditions.
The solid-state sensing element has no moving parts, providing high reliability, low maintenance and long-term stability. Each detector is factory calibrated, so there is no requirement for routine field calibration under normal operating conditions. Built-in diagnostics and an electronic self-test continuously monitor device health, while full time-stamped operational and event logs support incident investigation, audit requirements and configuration traceability. These design choices contribute to lower total cost of ownership and reduced demand on maintenance resources.
Bluetooth-enabled commissioning and safer access
To streamline commissioning and ongoing support, Honeywell Searchzone Sonik incorporates Bluetooth connectivity for non-intrusive setup, configuration, interrogation and maintenance from ground level using a suitable hazardous-area-rated smartphone or tablet. A dedicated mobile app enables saving, cloning and uploading configuration profiles across multiple detectors, supporting consistent parameter settings and faster deployment on large projects.
Bluetooth communication is secured using certificate-based mutual authentication and AES-128 encryption to help prevent unauthorised changes. Event logging combined with controlled Bluetooth access provides clear configuration history. Testing and verification can be performed from ground level using a handheld test unit and app, reducing the need for work at height, minimising exposure in hazardous areas and simplifying permit management.
Rugged, hazardous-area-ready construction
The detector is housed in robust stainless steel 316L, with painted stainless steel or aluminium variants available to balance weight and corrosion resistance, and optional plastic or stainless-steel sunshades for additional environmental protection. Units ship with an adjustable mounting bracket and sunshade as standard, and are supported by a range of compatible accessories and spares.
High ingress protection ratings provide dustproof, water-tight performance for outdoor and washdown environments. Searchzone Sonik is certified for use in hazardous areas, including Zone 1 / Division 1 classified locations, and is suitable for vibration-prone areas around compressors, turbines and other rotating equipment. Its extended operating temperature and humidity capabilities support reliable operation in extreme climates, offshore installations and corrosive process areas. The detector is designed for SIL2 applications in accordance with EN 61508 and has been independently assessed by TÜV, supporting integration within safety instrumented systems.
Flexible integration with control and safety systems
Searchzone Sonik integrates into both modern and legacy infrastructures. A configurable 4–20 mA analogue output with fault, inhibit, normal, warning and over-range signalling allows straightforward connection to existing control systems. Multiple digital communication options, including HART and Modbus RTU over RS-485 as well as Bluetooth, support connection to asset-management platforms and advanced monitoring tools. Dedicated fault and alarm relay outputs enable direct interfacing with panels and safety systems where discrete signalling is preferred.
Installation is simplified by angled dual cable entries (2 × M25 or 2 × 3/4″ NPT, depending on variant) and plug-in terminals, which help streamline wiring and reduce installation time. Standard and large universal mounts together with pole-mount kits enable a single detector platform to be applied consistently across a wide range of plant layouts, reducing engineering complexity and spares inventory.
Enhanced plant protection and lifecycle value
By detecting high-pressure gas leaks rapidly, even when gas does not reach concentration-based detectors, Honeywell Searchzone Sonik helps operators protect people, assets and the environment while supporting higher plant availability. Its robust construction, factory calibration, solid-state sensor and built-in diagnostics reduce routine intervention and support extended service intervals. A 36-month warranty from the date of shipment provides additional assurance and lifecycle support.
Across oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation and wider energy sectors, Searchzone Sonik offers vibration-tolerant performance, dependable operation in harsh climates and a practical route to strengthening mixed fixed gas detection systems without adding undue complexity or maintenance burden.
