Description

Honeywell BW Ultra is a portable five-gas detector for confined spaces in hazardous areas, combining fast 1‑Series sensing with connected worker visibility.

Honeywell BW Ultra is a handheld five-gas detector for confined space sampling and continuous monitoring in demanding industrial environments. It measures the four standard confined space gases plus a configurable fifth, using Honeywell 1‑Series sensors for rapid response and long service life. An integrated pump, large dot‑matrix display and ergonomic housing support safe pre‑entry checks, entry work and rescue. With rugged construction, global hazardous area approvals and built‑in Bluetooth connectivity, Honeywell BW Ultra supports both individual worker safety and fleet‑wide gas detection programmes.

AT A GLANCE

  • Confined space five-gas coverage: Monitors standard confined space gases plus a configurable fifth sensor to align with site-specific hazards.
  • Fast sensing, fewer nuisance alarms: 1‑Series sensors deliver rapid response, high accuracy and long life to improve confidence and reduce alarm fatigue.
  • Optimised for sampling and hole watch: Integrated pump, slim handheld profile and clear dot‑matrix display support pre‑entry testing and attendant duties.
  • Built for fleets and connected workers: Rugged, globally approved detector with Bluetooth connectivity, data logging and IntelliDox compatibility for centralised management.

Overview of Honeywell BW Ultra

Confined space monitoring with configurable five-gas coverage

Honeywell BW Ultra is engineered specifically for confined space entry, providing continuous monitoring before, during and after work. It measures oxygen, combustible gas and key toxic gases in a single instrument, with a fifth sensor position that can be configured for additional risks such as VOCs, carbon dioxide or other toxic gases. This approach allows standardisation on a single portable platform while tailoring each detector to the hazards of different assets or plants.

Sensor ranges and resolutions are tuned for confined space safety, supporting clear visibility of conditions at the opening, inside the space and during post‑job clearance. Available four‑gas and five‑gas configurations, together with multiple pre‑configured sensor combinations, simplify selection and deployment across diverse applications.

Integrated pumped design for safer pre‑entry testing

An internal pump enables active sampling from up to approximately 23 m away, allowing an atmosphere to be tested before any person approaches the entry point. Because the pump and sample path are fully contained within the housing, there are no external tubes or fittings to snag on ladders, hatches or obstructions. The detector can be held comfortably during sampling and then clipped on when moving through confined or cluttered spaces, maintaining continuous monitoring during entry and exit.

High-performance 1‑Series sensing and lower maintenance burden

Honeywell BW Ultra is the first multi-gas detector to incorporate Honeywell 1‑Series sensors. These sensors combine fast response times, high accuracy and long expected lifetimes, helping teams detect changing conditions sooner while reducing nuisance alarms. Longer sensor life and typical warranties on the instrument, sensors and battery support extended deployment cycles and help lower total cost of ownership.

Individual sensor enable/disable settings allow each detector to be configured for the specific task, avoiding unnecessary alarms and simplifying fleet management. LEL and PID correction factors support improved accuracy when monitoring different combustible gases and VOCs, while inert and essential modes extend use into inerting and ambient monitoring applications beyond confined space entry.

Rugged, ergonomic instrument for harsh industrial environments

The detector is designed for tough conditions in industries such as oil and gas, chemical processing, shipping, water treatment, and pulp and paper. A robust housing with honeycomb‑style reinforcement, scratch‑resistant display protector and IP66/68 ingress protection resists dust, dirt, wash‑downs and wet environments. A wide operating temperature and humidity range supports reliable performance in both hot, humid climates and cold, dry conditions.

Despite its rugged construction, Honeywell BW Ultra remains lightweight, with an ergonomic handheld form factor that fits the hand and minimises fatigue during extended sampling. The instrument is available in multiple colour options, including high‑visibility versions that improve detector identification in busy work areas.

Clear display, intuitive alarms and enhanced hole watch visibility

A large dot‑matrix display presents multiple gas readings and status information in an easy‑to‑read format, complemented by intuitive LCD icons for unambiguous interpretation. Hole Watch Mode introduces a graphical view that gives attendants enhanced situational awareness of gas levels and alarm states inside the space, helping them track evolving conditions at a glance.

Triple visual, vibrating and loud audible alarms clearly indicate low, high, TWA, STEL and over‑limit conditions. Optional latching alarms can be configured so that hazardous readings must be acknowledged and investigated before they clear, supporting robust site procedures. A stealth mode is also available for applications where audible and visual signals must be suppressed while monitoring continues.

Straightforward operation and streamlined maintenance

One‑button, tamper‑proof operation simplifies day‑to‑day use and helps avoid accidental setting changes, reducing training time for new users. A multi‑language interface, covering major global languages, supports consistent use across international teams and multi‑site operations.

Routine testing and service are designed to be fast and repeatable. Honeywell TouchConnect technology provides contactless access to bump test and calibration modes and enables configuration changes without navigating complex menus. Compatibility with the IntelliDox docking system allows automated bump tests, calibrations and configuration updates, which is particularly valuable when managing larger detector fleets. Replaceable pump filters, batteries, clips and user interface components further simplify maintenance, while an automatic 24‑hour internal self‑test of sensors, battery and circuitry helps ensure the detector is ready when required.

Connected worker capability and fleet-wide insight

Built‑in Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity links Honeywell BW Ultra to Honeywell Safety Communicator and compatible systems, enabling remote monitoring of live gas readings and alarms. This capability gives supervisors and control rooms additional insight into conditions around confined space work, supporting faster decision‑making during routine tasks and incident response.

Extensive data logging of gas measurements, combined with event logging of alarms and bump tests, provides a detailed record for post‑incident analysis and regulatory reporting. Integration with software platforms such as Honeywell Safety Suite and compatibility with wider communication ecosystems, including supported radio systems, enable centralised reporting and fleet management. Intelliflash or similar compliance indicators give at‑a‑glance confirmation that each detector is within compliance parameters or requires attention.

Compliance and long-term deployment

Honeywell BW Ultra carries leading global hazardous area certifications, making it suitable for use in classified locations and allowing organisations to standardise on a single detector platform across multiple regions. Typical warranties on the instrument, battery and most sensors, together with traceable calibration certificates and available service options, support long-term compliance strategies and asset planning.

The detector is supported by standardised accessories, documentation, manuals and downloadable datasheets, making it well suited to large-scale rollouts. Free technical support, training and product demonstrations commonly offered by distributors assist with commissioning, user training and ongoing optimisation of confined space gas detection programmes.
