Overview of Honeywell Sensepoint XRL
Smart, Connected Gas Detection for Hazardous Areas
Honeywell Sensepoint XRL is a permanent, fixed-point gas detector designed for demanding industrial and hazardous locations. It monitors flammable gases, a wide range of toxic gases and oxygen, supporting continuous protection in areas such as manufacturing facilities, petrochemical plants, fuelling depots, vehicle test facilities, water treatment plants and battery charging areas. Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity allows safe, non-intrusive access from the Sensepoint gas detector app on a compatible smartphone or tablet, with live gas readings available from up to approximately 10Â m away.
This app-based interface replaces specialised programming tools with familiar mobile workflows. Clear on-screen menus and guided steps help reduce training time, improve consistency between technicians and support repeatable procedures across large, multi-site installations.
Non-Intrusive Calibration and Lower Maintenance Overhead
Sensepoint XRL enables one-person, non-intrusive calibration and maintenance. Calibration gas is applied externally while all adjustments take place via the app, so there is no need to open the housing. This approach helps preserve explosion-proof integrity, reduces the need for hot work permits and shortens service windows in classified areas. App-guided calibration, bump tests and diagnostics streamline fault-finding, while automatic generation of calibration, maintenance and gas-history reports supports proactive maintenance planning.
Designed for a typical 10-year device lifetime (excluding the replaceable sensor), the detector supports long-term monitoring strategies. Replaceable sensor cartridges and module sets allow field replacement without major hardware changes, helping reduce call-outs, minimise downtime and lower total cost of ownership.
Digital Records for Compliance and Audit Readiness
The Sensepoint gas detector app automatically compiles commissioning, calibration, maintenance and gas-history reports. These digital records are easy to share and archive, reducing reliance on paper-based documentation. For organisations subject to internal audits or external inspections, ready access to time-stamped records helps demonstrate that gas detection systems are installed, configured and maintained in line with internal procedures and applicable standards.
Flexible Gas Coverage and Platform Standardisation
Sensepoint XRL is available in variants for flammable gases and multiple toxic gases plus oxygen, including options such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and chlorine. Adjustable measuring ranges allow alignment with individual process risks and site standards. Extensive sensor and module options are offered in both 4–20 mA and Modbus variants, enabling standardisation on a single detector platform across different plant areas.
This common platform approach simplifies engineering, training and spares management. Backwards-compatible accessories and shared sensors with Sensepoint XCL/XRL installations further reduce inventory complexity, especially on multi-site deployments.
Rugged Design for Harsh and Outdoor Environments
An LM20 aluminium alloy enclosure with IP66 and NEMA 4X ratings allows Sensepoint XRL to withstand dust, water and washdown conditions, supporting outdoor and harsh industrial applications. The detector operates over a wide temperature range, with high humidity tolerance and an atmospheric pressure range suitable for typical industrial site elevations. A compact footprint and moderate weight aid installation on walls, ducts, poles and structures where space is limited.
Two enclosure colour options support different site strategies: charcoal grey for discreet placement, and high-visibility yellow where clear visual marking of gas detection points is preferred. A multi-colour LED light ring provides at-a-glance status indication, including normal operation, alarm, warning, fault, inhibited, Bluetooth pairing and Bluetooth connection. In large installations, this clear status indication helps personnel quickly locate detectors requiring attention during alarms or routine walkdowns.
Installation, Integration and System Design
Sensepoint XRL supports both analog 4–20 mA (0–22 mA) and digital Modbus RTU outputs, enabling integration with Honeywell Touchpoint Plus controllers as well as a wide range of third-party control systems. Selectable source or sink current on analog models enhances compatibility with different panel designs and legacy infrastructure. Low power consumption across both mA and Modbus variants assists in energy-efficient system design, particularly where many detectors share the same power and control networks.
Installation is simplified using pluggable rising-clamp terminals that accept common industrial wiring sizes. Each detector is supplied with key installation items such as a metal stopping plug (M20 or 3/4″ NPT), registration sheet, hex key and quick start guide, helping accelerate deployment from delivery to commissioning.
Accessories and Application Versatility
A comprehensive accessory range supports deployment in diverse applications. Options include calibration caps, flow housings, duct mount kits, pole mount brackets, weather protection caps and collecting cones, allowing detectors to be positioned in open areas, on process lines and within ventilation ducts while retaining a common hardware platform. This flexibility helps standardise on Sensepoint XRL across indoor, outdoor and hard-to-reach locations.
Broad hazardous area approvals and key electrical safety and EMC certifications, together with compatibility with rugged, certified Android handheld devices for use with the app in hazardous zones, complete the ecosystem. Combined, these features make Honeywell Sensepoint XRL a cost-effective, modern fixed gas detection solution for both new installations and retrofit upgrades in industrial and commercial environments.
