Honeywell Series 3000 is a fixed toxic gas and oxygen detector for hazardous areas, combining smart sensors with low-disruption maintenance.
Honeywell Series 3000 is a fixed gas detector and transmitter platform for continuous monitoring of toxic gases and oxygen in industrial areas classified due to flammable gases, vapours or combustible dust. It combines interchangeable smart electrochemical sensors, rugged housings and global hazardous area approvals in a compact, loop-powered design. Flexible mounting options, hot-swappable intrinsically safe sensors and non-intrusive calibration help engineering teams standardise on one detector family, shorten installation time and reduce ongoing maintenance effort across new projects and retrofits.

Honeywell Series 3000 is designed for fixed monitoring of toxic gases and oxygen in potentially explosive atmospheres. Available in MkII and MkIII versions, it covers typical Zone 0, 1 and 2 requirements and supports North American classified locations (model and barrier dependent). This enables consistent detection technology across facilities such as exploration and production platforms, refineries, chemical plants, power generation sites, utilities, wastewater treatment works and commercial or manufacturing buildings where toxic and oxygen hazards are present.
The detector pairs a rugged epoxy-painted aluminium or 316 stainless steel housing with a stainless-steel sensor body and PTFE filter, delivering corrosion resistance and protection from contaminants. High ingress protection ratings (IP66 / NEMA 4X) and a dust- and water-resistant enclosure support reliable operation both indoors and outdoors, including offshore, exposed process areas and harsh industrial environments.
Series 3000 has been engineered to simplify both new installations and upgrades. A low-power, two-wire, loop-powered 4–20 mA output allows the detector to be tied directly into existing control and safety systems, reducing cabling requirements and panel load. The flameproof transmitter design can, where permitted, allow field wiring to share trays or conduits with non-intrinsically safe instruments, helping to contain installation and conduit costs.
Integral surface mounting lugs and a universal mounting bracket support rapid wall or flat-surface installation without special tooling. Optional horizontal or vertical pipe brackets enable mounting directly onto existing pipework, while a duct mounting kit supports monitoring in ventilation and process ducts. Multiple conduit and cable entry options help the detector align with regional wiring practices and fit into space-limited locations.
The platform supports common hazardous area engineering strategies. Series 3000 MkII uses a flameproof housing with an intrinsically safe sensor connection, suited to many Zone 1 applications. Series 3000 MkIII is intended for use with a separate intrinsically safe barrier so the complete transmitter can be located in Zone 0. Compatibility with typical zener barriers and galvanic isolators helps it integrate with existing intrinsic safety schemes. For brownfield projects, Series 3000 can be retrofitted in place of legacy Honeywell Series 2000 detectors, allowing reuse of suitable cabling and mounting points.
At the core of Series 3000 is proven Surecell™ electrochemical sensing technology, developed for fast, stable detection even in hot and humid conditions. The detector accepts an extensive portfolio of interchangeable sensor cartridges for oxygen and a wide range of toxic gases, enabling standardisation on one transmitter type across multiple hazards and plant areas. This reduces spares holdings, simplifies training and allows engineering teams to configure different detection points simply by fitting the appropriate sensor.
Long-life sensing elements, with typical smart sensor lifetimes of more than two years for many gases, support predictable maintenance planning. Sensors and cell exchange kits are supplied as pre-calibrated smart cartridges, with auto sensor recognition that automatically configures the transmitter when a compatible sensor is fitted. Optional calibration cups and collecting cones assist with applying test gas and improving gas capture efficiency, while weatherproof caps, sunshades and deluge protection accessories support reliable performance in exposed or washdown environments.
Series 3000 is built to minimise downtime and reduce the overhead of maintaining a fixed gas detection network. Intrinsically safe smart sensors are supplied pre-configured for plug-and-play installation, and the hot-swappable design allows sensor replacement without removing power from the transmitter. Combined with non-intrusive configuration and calibration via the front panel, this enables one-person servicing in hazardous areas, helping to reduce permit requirements, avoid opening enclosures and shorten maintenance windows.
An easy-to-read LCD provides local gas readings, status information and icon-driven menus. Maintenance teams can set user-programmable calibration intervals to match site schedules, optimising manpower and reducing unplanned visits. Integral fault diagnostic software helps technicians pinpoint issues quickly, while dedicated fault and inhibit signalling over the 4–20 mA loop supports safe integration into distributed control systems and safety instrumented functions, aiding safer start-up, testing and maintenance activities.
Honeywell Series 3000 functions as a scalable detection platform rather than an isolated instrument. Low power consumption reduces demand on control system power supplies, while pre-calibrated replacement sensors, modular display and terminal modules, and widely available accessories support long-term lifecycle management. Weatherproof housing options with bump test ports enable convenient functional checks on installed detectors without dismantling hardware.
A broad selection of brackets, plugs, consumables and spare parts assists standardisation across sites with differing mounting and environmental requirements. Combined with comprehensive datasheets, manuals and technical documents, this supports correct specification, installation and ongoing maintenance. When integrated with complementary Honeywell gas detection ecosystem components, Series 3000 provides a dependable foundation for protecting personnel and plant assets from toxic and oxygen gas hazards across complex industrial operations.
