Overview of Honeywell RAEGuard 2
Rugged Fixed VOC Monitoring for Hazardous and Harsh Environments
Honeywell RAEGuard 2 is purpose-built for continuous VOC monitoring where safety, uptime and regulatory compliance are critical. Its fixed photoionisation detector design provides round-the-clock surveillance of VOC hazards in both safe and classified areas, supporting protection of personnel, assets and processes. A robust 316 stainless-steel, explosion-proof enclosure with IP65 ingress protection resists corrosion, washdown, dust and rain, while compliance with international hazardous-area standards makes the detector suitable for global deployment across refineries, chemical plants, semiconductor manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper and general industrial sites.
The detector operates over a wide temperature and humidity range and meets demanding industrial vibration requirements, so it can be mounted on outdoor pipe racks, high-vibration equipment skids or in confined spaces. Low power consumption and modest maximum operating current reduce load on power infrastructure, helping simplify upgrades and retrofits where spare power capacity is limited.
Advanced PID Performance with Fast, Stable VOC Detection
At the core of the RAEGuard 2 is a digital smart sensor using DigiPID technology to deliver broad VOC measurement capability with multiple detection ranges and resolutions. Environmental self-adaptation, high accuracy around the calibration point and built-in humidity compensation work together to maintain stable, repeatable readings and reduce drift, even in humid or variable conditions.
The detector is designed for rapid response. Flow-through and internal pump sampling options deliver fast T90 response times, enabling early warning of leaks or process deviations. A large UV lamp and superior sealing support high sensitivity and reduced false alarms, while PTFE filter inserts and a coalescing filter system shield the sensor from particulates and moisture to extend sensor life and measurement reliability.
More than 200 built-in correction factors enable VOC-specific measurement and improved indication for a wide range of compounds, supporting applications involving common solvents, aromatics, heat-transfer fluids and other VOCs in process areas, tank farms, loading bays and industrial workspaces.
Flexible Integration with Control, Safety and Building Systems
Honeywell RAEGuard 2 is engineered for straightforward integration into existing safety and control architectures. A 4–20 mA three-wire analogue output connects directly to standard gas detection panels, PLCs and distributed control systems, while RS‑485 Modbus communication provides digital access to real-time data for SCADA and remote monitoring applications. One analogue output and one digital communication port keep system design simple and predictable across multiple installations.
Three programmable dry-contact relays (Low, High and Fault) allow direct interfacing with beacons, sounders, shutdown logic and building management systems. Configurable alarm thresholds and adjustable sensitivity enable engineers to tailor alarm behaviour to specific processes and risk profiles, from high-hazard process units to laboratory ventilation control. Mesh-capable or wireless-ready variants, where available, support integration into broader gas detection networks and site-wide safety platforms.
Fast Installation, Non-Intrusive Configuration and Low Maintenance
Installation is streamlined by a compact, wall-mount enclosure with a 3/4 in NPT mounting thread and 0.75 in inlet connector, making it suitable for both new projects and brownfield retrofits. Internal sampling pump and diffusion versions support different sampling strategies, including remote sample points and confined spaces, allowing standardisation on a single detector platform across varying applications.
Service detectors in classified areas: Non-intrusive configuration and calibration using the magnetic key interface and local display avoid opening the explosion-proof housing, helping reduce permit requirements, minimise work at height and shorten service visits. A removable digital PID sensor module allows rapid calibration and replacement in hazardous locations without tools, supporting one-person maintenance and reduced downtime.
Automatic and fresh-air (auto-zero) calibration routines, together with standard two-point calibration using isobutylene and adjustable zero and span functions, provide consistent, repeatable calibration procedures. A clear graphic matrix LCD shows live gas readings, status and configuration data, while the local sounder and multi-colour LED indicators provide immediate visual and audible notification of alarms and faults to on-site personnel.
Rugged construction, a typical sensor operating life of approximately two years and readily available spare DigiPID modules, lamps, dust filters, water trap filters and UV shields all contribute to reduced lifecycle cost. Default relay configurations and programmable parameters assist in standardising commissioning across multiple units and sites, simplifying documentation and operator training.
Supporting Safety, Compliance and Air Quality Across Industries
Continuous VOC monitoring with Honeywell RAEGuard 2 supports safety, environmental and occupational health programmes by helping facilities detect VOC releases quickly and maintain controlled exposure levels. Fast response and early warning capability are particularly important where toxic, odorous or process-critical VOCs can affect worker safety, product quality or environmental performance.
Typical applications include refinery and petrochemical units, chemical and pharmaceutical production lines, semiconductor manufacturing, pulp and paper operations and general industrial VOC monitoring. The detector is also well suited to air-quality monitoring in medical, pathology and histology laboratories and other workspaces where solvent use and VOC emissions must be tightly managed. Backed by Honeywell documentation, technical support and optional maintenance services, RAEGuard 2 provides a robust, long-term fixed VOC detection solution that integrates readily with Honeywell and third-party controllers and alarm systems.
