Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a naturally occurring gas with many industrial applications, including food and beverage production, refrigeration, greenhouses, laboratories, and confined space work. While essential in many processes, CO₂ is colourless and odourless, displacing oxygen in enclosed spaces and leading to headaches, dizziness, unconsciousness, or even death at elevated concentrations. Because these hazards can develop without warning, continuous monitoring is critical wherever CO₂ is produced, stored, or used.
