Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless, and highly toxic gas produced by incomplete combustion of carbon-based fuels. It is a significant hazard in industries such as mining, steelmaking, shipping, tunnelling, and confined space entry. Even at low concentrations, CO binds to haemoglobin in the blood more readily than oxygen, reducing the body’s ability to transport oxygen and leading to symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and, at higher levels, loss of consciousness or death. Because it provides no warning signs, continuous monitoring is essential.
